Resolution Calling for State Committeewoman and State Committeeman Positions for the Young Democrats of Wyoming and WDP Caucuses

Why We are Introducing a Resolution

We’re a year out from the 2020 Convention where these changes can be made but it doesn’t hurt to inform the newly-elected party leaders where we stand. Last year’s convention was historic to include bylaw language recognizing Constituent Caucuses but this also unnecessarily meant taking away our 2 of our 3 voting seats on the State Central Committee.

The Young WyoDems are nationally recognized by the Young Democrats of America. we work with young folks in our state, and maintain a strong relationship with the Wyoming Democratic Party. We want to continue to build upon what we’ve accomplished in the past 2 years and recognize the value in having our National Committeewoman and National Committeeman also serve on the State Central Committee. The positions of Young WyoDems Chair, Committeewoman, and Committeeman help foster on-the-ground relationships, act as representatives between what’s happening locally, statewide, and nationally, and are the future leaders of the Wyoming Democratic Party.

At this weekend’s meeting, the Young WyoDems and caucuses will be electing committee people. They will have the same responsibilities as county committee people but not the votes.

Why Do We Support Caucuses Having the Same Seats

We understand there is concern with adding new seats to the SCC. But we believe growth in participation and engagement from Democrats across backgrounds help educate us on important issues and strengthens the Party. We should be empowering Democrats of color who are impacted by a privatized immigration prison to organize and speak out. We should be empowering Democratic women who are impacted by fair wage and reproductive health legislation to organize and speak out.

If we want to see more young people, women, LGBTQ people, workers, and people of color engaging in Wyoming politics and running for office, we need to show that the Wyoming Democratic Party values their voice. We can do that by stating if your values are Democratic values and we know it can be hard to speak out sometimes but we’re listening. Your voice carries weight and deserves a seat at our table. This is what outreach to untapped communities looks like.

Right now, we have the Women’s Caucus, Labor Caucus, and Progressive Caucus. A Latino Caucus is in the works and we’ll have the opportunity to vote and recognize them next year. Let’s make sure when Latino Democrats come to our table, we pull out some chairs.

Resolution Calling for State Committeewoman and State Committeeman Positions for the Young Democrats of Wyoming and WDP Caucuses

Aka “Everyone Deserves a Seat at the Table”

Whereas, the Wyoming Democratic Party’s Platform Preamble states:

“The Wyoming Democratic Party seeks to ensure that all people enjoy the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. We welcome people of every race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, and ability. We work for justice, domestic tranquility, the common defense, the general welfare, and liberty. Wyoming’s rich legacy of equality, freedom, wide-open spaces, and being good neighbors improves the lives of everyone.”

Whereas, the Wyoming Democratic Party’s Platform encourages all Democrats to get involved; and,

Whereas, at the 2018 Platform Convention, Young Democrats of Wyoming were stripped of two (2) state central committees seats, State Committeewoman and State Committeeman, in accordance with bylaw changes that established regulations for WDP caucuses; and,

Whereas, the Young Democrats of Wyoming have historically held three (3) voting seats on the State Central Committee and 1(one) on the Executive Committee to promote Young Democrat participation and engagement and train the next generation of leaders to the Wyoming Democratic Party; and,

Whereas, with the 2017 re-establishment of the Young Democrats of Wyoming has fostered the growth of WDP Caucuses which ardently advocate for underrepresented and marginalized voices - such as young people, women, workers, LGBTQ people, people with disabilities, and people of color (Black, Latinx, immigrants, Asian, Pasifika, and Native and Indigenous peoples) to participate in the Wyoming Democratic Party and Wyoming politics as a whole; and,

Whereas, the Wyoming Democratic Party and all Democratic organizations value every voice; seek to engage all communities to vote, run for office, and get involved; and believe everyone deserves a seat at the table; and,

Therefore, be it resolved, the Wyoming Democratic Party and its subcommittees will support bylaw changes at the 2020 State Convention to reinstate the Young Democrats of Wyoming’s State Committeewoman and State Committeeman positions to the State Central Committee and add the aforementioned positions for the WDP Caucuses.
